Peter wrote his first letter to churches throughout Asia Minor that were suffering for simply being Christians. He wrote to encourage them in who they are as “elect exiles” (1:3) and how they ought to live (2:11–12). In 1 Peter 2:2–4, he reminds them of who they are as local churches. Something miraculous happens when we’re born again through the preaching of God’s word (1:22–2:1) and come to Christ to mature as Christians (2:2–3). He forms us as his spiritual house with the resurrected Christ as the cornerstone (2:4–8) and chooses us as his true people (2:9–10).
