What Is Mercy?

Mercy is God’s kindness toward sinners with an emphasis on their need. And this is how our passage ends—with the reminder that God’s mercy is for Jews, his beloved people—and for Gentiles, too. Though Romans 11 is a battleground of various interpretations, the main theme is evident. The Jewish people rejected God that the Gentiles might be brought into the kingdom. In God’s kindness, many Jews will see God’s grace in the church, be jealous, and come to saving faith themselves—all because our God is a God of mercy.
